Best of Both Worlds
This solo exhibition, Markham’s fourth at Winchester Galleries, comprises 22 mixed-media collage paintings. Says Markham: “While my previous exhibitions have mostly featured all paintings or all collage, this new show represents a fusion of both styles.”
Collage is the artist’s favourite medium to work with. He “enjoys all aspects of it: the collecting of material, the arrangements, the themes, the references, the juxtapositions, and the way that each collage dictates its own set of rules. This last element of collage, 'executing the formula', is very much like playing a game or solving a puzzle. As soon as the basic component or pattern of a piece is revealed to me, it seems to take on a life of its own. Once this happens, always early in the work, I can start to perceive what the final product might look like. It becomes an automatic process in which I am in control of the general direction, yet pleasantly surprised by the outcome.”
Born in Carmel, California in 1971, Markham studied fine arts at Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design, Los Angeles. He has traveled to various parts of the world, studying the art and history of many places, with a particular interest in ancient cultures.
