Montpetit hails from an artistic family: his parents are Richard Montpetit and Jeannette Perreault. With much early exposure to fine art, Raphael was 18 years old when he started exhibiting his works in 1998 at the well-known Kastel Gallery in Westmount, Quebec. Success was almost instantaneous, and his first solo exhibition was mounted about a year later.
Since then, Raphael has been represented by established art galleries in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary and Baie Saint-Paul. He has had several solo exhibitions, including sellout shows, and he was also featured in Canadian art magazines such as Parcours and Magazin’Art. His work can be found in many private collections.
After he virtually stopped painting between the years 2010 and 2017, Raphael is now back to his brushes.
Shadows and sunlight render Montpetit’s streetscapes and figurative work warm yet somehow mysterious. He tries to capture the silent world of the city, people minding their own business, and the violent but delicate contrast when sunlight hits snow. His style is classical and at the same time contemporary.
