John Nugent - New Work (2005)

(At 1010 Broad Street, Victoria)

John Nugent is one of Canada's master sculptors. The forthcoming (2005) designation by the Saskatchewan government of Nugent's studio in Lumsden as a provincial heritage sight underscores his place in the narrative of Canadian Art. The medium of Nugent's best known work which is from the 1960s to 1990s is large scale steel. In recent years Nugent, already an award winning photographer, has been exploring electronic media. He has, at least in part, put down the welding torch to create empirical images with a digital camera and "image objects" burnt onto CDR. These various explorations of media give the viewer an insight into the complexity of Nugent's singular aesthetic vision.

"S/citing" presents three small steel sculptures from the last several years, six large black and white photos of snow drifts, and six small (8 x 10 inch) black and white photos of sculpture. (Also on site: some choice, small 1970s, and 80s' sculpture by John Nugent).
