Grant Boland grew up at St. Mary's Bay, Newfoundland. He studied art for four years at Sir Wilfred Grenfell University, Cornerbrook. In 1994 he moved to St. John's where, in the same year, he had his first solo exhibition.
Boland's artwork addresses a wide range of subject-matter, and any one of his works shows a preponderance of either a painterly or realistic, even high realistic, style. One constant is his strong use of light, and he quite frequently employs Baroque elements such as diagonals and asymmetry. The coherence, the eloquence perhaps, which the design elements reveal, are a measure, it may be said, of the value he gives to aesthetics, that is, to the visual appeal of the composition.

The Globe and Mail in 1995 named Grant Boland a rising star of the arts in Canada. In 1997 he won an Emerging Artist of the Year Award from the Newfoundland Arts Council and the CBC, and in 1997 and 1999 an Elizabeth Greenshield's Award (a Canada-based international award).
