Marion Wagschal was born in Trinidad in 1943. She arrived in Montreal in the 1960s. Her highly individual brand of realism set her apart from other abstract artists practising in Montreal at that time. Her subjects are intimate portrayals of relatives and friends that in corporate art historical and mythical references. Wagschal's work embraces a modern sensibility integrated with traditional figurative painting. Her subjects are painted with an acute eye for fleshly detail and also exhibit a sensitivity that alludes to the melancholy aspect of aging.
Marion Wagschal has taught for many years at Concordia University in Montreal. Her work is found in many public collections including the Musée d'art contemporain de Montreal, Musée des beaux-arts de Montreal and the University of Lethbridge, Alberta.
