Marian Scott (1926 - 1993) - Abstract Work

Abstract Work

Marian Scott was one of Canada's most socio-politically aware artists and one of Canada's finest painters of urban and industrial scenes. Her flower paintings of the 1940s are also highly acclaimed as are her painted evocations of molecular life.

In c1958 Scott's work became non-objective, an approach she continued until a few months before her death thirty-five years later. Exemplars for Scott in the early 1960s were Rothco and McEwen, and in c1965-71 "hard-edge" abstractionists such as Molinari. An undulating lines-over-ground series lasted until 1975, and in c1976 the first 'web' paintings appeared, a series she continued until 1985 when she began her final series, a predominantly gestural one.

This large exhibition at Winchester Galleries, 1010 Broad Street, points to Scott's abiding interest in the interplay of structural and lyrical elements. She is also shown to be an amazingly inventive and accomplished artist.
