Sylvia Reizes was educated at the Ontario College of Art and at Concordia University (Montreal) where she earned her BFA. In 2004 she completed a post-graduate year with Robin Mayor at the Victoria College of Art. During the last few years she has been working on non-objective paintings, exploring the perceptual qualities inherent in her materials. Influences such as the Russian Constructivists, the Bauhaus designers, American and Canadian painters of the second half of the 20th century are reflected in her work. Using collage and the application of acrylic paint and mediums, she decontextualizes non-traditional materials, e.g. corrugated cardboard, exotic paper and found objects. This transformation is mediated by her minimal aesthetics and formal compositions, the result being paintings that are both elegant and serene, balancing tension and composure. Subtle differences occur as the light and the point-of-view change. By eschewing iconography and emphasizing the physicality of the painting, Sylvia Reizes produces unique perceptual and visually tactile experiences.
