Margaret Peterson was born in 1902 in Seattle. For 22 years she taught art at her alma mater, the University of California. A devoted Picassoite and follower of Elmer Bischoff, Peterson was also greatly influenced by pre-Columbian art of Central and South America, Aboriginal artwork of the North- West Coast and Middle Eastern art. She came up with her own synthesis and the insights were often brilliant. Peterson developed a national reputation as one of the most vital of the West Coast painters.
In c1951 she and her Canadian husband Howard O’Hagan moved to Cowichan Bay and in 1956 to Victoria. From 1963 to 1974 their home-base was the Island of Salina, Italy. In c1964 she created an interior glass mosaic panel for the McPherson Library and in 1974 a mosaic for the BC Hydro building, Victoria. Her painting work is represented in The Oakland Museum of Art, The California Palace of Legion of Honor in San Francisco, The National Gallery of Canada, etc.
