Tony Paine, born in Kent, studied wood engraving at Folkstone Art School and painting at Bromley College of Art.  In 1958 he graduated with a degree in Education from the University of Birmingham.  He taught school for five years and in 1963 immigrated to Canada. For three years he worked as an art teacher for the St. John, New Brunswick, Board of Education and from 1967 to 1976 was a Faculty member in Fine Arts at the University of Toronto.  He also served as an Artist in Residence in the Faculty of Architecture.  In 1967 Tony and his wife Eleanor, also a professional artist, opened a design firm specializing in silk screen printing of textiles (scarves, draperies, table cloths, etc.).  This successful enterprise was sold in 1998, both artists moving to Victoria in 1999.

Tony Paine’s Cycloptic series, 1972-74, looked at issues concerning over-population and pollution. His Sheep, Rocks and Rainbows series, c1981-83, presented light­hearted characterizations. Pure geometry, montage and vivid colour conferred a positive aspect to such series, and so with the current one which portrays marvellous spectacle.
