Paintings from the estate
(at 2260 Oak Bay Ave)

Born in India, Max Maynard lived in Canada and the United States from 1912.

He painted actively for over 50 years and exhibited widely in both countries. He was a well-known associate of Emily Carr and Jack Shadbolt during the 1930s and 1940s and exhibited with both painters. Shadbolt regarded him as his "first mentor".

During the 1940s, he was briefly the interim director of the Vancouver Art Gallery. For many years he was a professor (later Professor Emeritus) of English Literature at the University of New Hampshire. Maynard lived in Victoria and Vancouver from 1912 to 1942. He returned to Canada permanently in 1978.
