‘Don Jean-Louis: Silver Works’ was exhibited in Ontario in 2006-2007 and at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria from September 19, 2008 to January 4, 2009. A richly-illustrated catalogue was issued for both venues. New paintings which elaborate on the theme of that travelling show are featured in this new exhibition.
The new work may be described as simply abstract but at the same time it serves as a metaphor for the modern world. In Wyndham Lewis’ words, that world is ‘a vacuum informed by power.’ In Don Jean-Louis’ paintings, the world is a vacuum informed by a mechanistic, grid-like screen symbolizing the ubiquitous power of futuristic technology.
Don Jean-Louis’ renown contribution to Canadian art is forcefully exemplified in this exhibition which speaks with compact expressiveness of the daunting technology which shapes humanity today.
