Artist, teacher, poet and philosopher, Don Jarvis was a dominant figure in the West Coast artistic community for over half a century. His deep fascination with and passion for that part of the world was a driving force in a lifetime of creativity.
His experience as a student of the abstract painter Hans Hoffman in new York led him on a voyage of exploration of the human condition, especially in an urban setting which was affected by profound and disturbing forces.
For the rest of his working life, proximity to the primeval forest influenced his art, his perception of life and our place in the natural world.
"I see the painter as an instrument, a function, a conduit of the essential unity. My work is a metaphor, never simile. I make no distinction between subject and object, inner and outer, maker and viewer. I am continually surprised by what arises on the canvas or the paper. I am not a 'creator'. How can one create what is already there? I am mist, trees, rain, sun, brush, canvas, weather, season, figure."
Donald Jarvis, 1999.
