Peter Daglish lives and works in London, England, but has had a connection with Victoria since 1969-71 when he taught at the University of Victoria. He subsequently taught at The Chelsea School of Art and The Slade, and developed his own art practice.
The theme of Daglish’s paintings, drawings and prints is urban, focusing on aspects of ‘city life’ with its countless scenarios witnessed in restaurants and bars. Other inspirations for his art are street life, poetry and jazz. He himself plays baritone saxophone in various jazz ensembles in London.
His visual arts style is resonant with African, Oceanic and Modernist art and bespeaks a lineage from American Pop art, for instance Richard Lindner. In turn, Daglish has been an influence on a new wave of artists such as Chris Ofili and other painters graduating from Chelsea and The Slade.
The exhibition at Winchester features 28 Daglish bamboo pen and ink drawings which underscore an improvisational quality that is analogous to his interest in jazz.
This exhibition has been curated by Kapil Jariwala, who was trained as a painter at Chelsea School of Art in the early 1970s. During that time he was taught by Peter Daglish. Jariwala went on to open his own gallery in London's west-end and has also curated many acclaimed museum exhibitions including the recent 'The Indian Portrait 1560-1860' at the National Portrait Gallery, London.
A fully illustrated catalogue is available with an introduction by Kapil Jariwala - also view a pdf version.
