Gordon Caruso (1923-2004) attended the Vancouver School of Art and did post-graduate studies with Richard Diebenkorn at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. In Vancouver, Caruso taught at Langara College and UBC. He retired in 1989 from teaching and in 1992 located to Salt Spring Island. His artwork in Vancouver was often colour-field with a strong gestural component including symbols (crosses, Xs, Os … ). A late series there featured paint over applied photographs. On Salt Spring Island Caruso frequently painted on irregularly-shaped canvas onto which he had collaged sundry materials – bark, sticks, etc. His work became increasingly emotionally charged. He was not a reactionary painter but most characteristically an expressionistic and shamanistic one. Caruso created a large body of work of high quality.
