Nathan Birch was born in Lansing, Michigan, moved to Canada at an early age and was raised in Edmonton, Alberta. After earning his BFA at the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary, he began to actively pursue his artistic goals in painting the landscapes where he has lived: the Alberta Prairies, the West Coast of British Columbia and the Rocky Mountains.
To this end Nathan continues to explore, through paint, the relationships between the painting as a window vs. the painting as an object.
“It is of the greatest importance to me that my paintings be about truth. Truth in how they depict the landscapes they represent as well as truth in what a landscape painting really is.
Landscape paintings are not, in fact, windows to the outside world, however much we are commonly lead to believe so. They are illusions made of painterly materials which can only allude to the scene they represent. I choose to paint in a multi-panel format, wrapping the image around the edges of the canvas, because I wish to create a balanced, truthful tug-of-war between thepaintingas a fictional window through the walland the painting as an object on the wall.”
Nathan currently lives and works in Fernie, BC.
