Joe Average - then Brock Tebbut - spent his first seventeen years in Victoria.  When he was 19 he took the name Joe Average.  He was living in Montreal, and in 1983, after three years in Toronto, he moved to Vancouver.  His pop art images - sometimes in fanciful cartoon form - feature flat and smooth colours and reduced, stylized, sometimes playful line.  Visible brush strokes are typically absent.  The immediacy of the image is emphasized.  Joe Average is much celebrated nationally and has also been gaining international recognition.
